Use simple terms such as inside, outside, short, deep, left, or right. The current official FF3 sources do not document a formal coverage-call menu, so do not present community play names as built-in mechanics.
Know the final defensive layer. If no teammate protects deep space, keep more depth. If help is clearly inside, you may protect the outside route more aggressively while still watching changes.
Player-focused coverage
In a player-focused responsibility, mirror the meaningful route while maintaining leverage. Do not copy every tiny movement. Protect the direction that would create the easiest target and keep enough space to respond to a break.
Watch the receiver’s path and glance at the quarterback for release. Staring at one means missing the other. Use a camera angle that preserves both as long as possible.
If the receiver crosses into a teammate’s area, communicate before passing responsibility. Following indefinitely can leave your original side empty. If no teammate is ready, stay with the immediate threat rather than assuming an exchange occurred.
Space-focused coverage
In a space-focused responsibility, hold an area and react to receivers entering it. Maintain a position that can close more than one nearby window without standing exactly between them. When a receiver leaves, check the next threat before chasing.
Depth matters. Too shallow invites a throw behind; too deep gives a free short completion. Adjust to down-and-distance only when the current game displays and uses that context clearly. The universal goal is to force a more difficult decision.
Communicate overlapping areas. Two defenders sitting in the same small space create no extra protection elsewhere.
Read routes and quarterback together
Receiver width, speed change, and break direction show where the window may form. Quarterback camera and release show when the ball commits. Keep leverage through the route, then choose the shortest safe path to the ball.
Do not move toward a pump fake as though an outcome is guaranteed. QB+ confirms a pump-fake feature exists, but its official listing does not state a fixed defender reaction. Respond to the actual release.
